Explore our 2019 Thinkery Camp themes!

Thinkery hosts camps for young innovators (Pre-K–5th grade) during spring break and summer 2019. Thinkery Camps offer several unique themes that inspire campers to learn while having fun. Campers use science, technology, engineering, arts and math--and their imaginations, of course!--to explore new concepts, solve challenges and develop critical learning skills.

STEAM Themes

Fantastic Human Machine

Discover the intricate inner workings of the human body! From cells to senses, explore the amazing machine that is your body, and even reinvent your own functioning anatomical component.

Pre-K–K

What systems make up your body? Create models that pump, ooze and move like the many parts of the human machine. Practice body control with breathing, sensory and coordination challenges.

1st–2nd grade

Let’s get small!  Take a microscopic look at the human body and investigate the millions of cells, nerves, and veins that work together to help you function! Challenge your senses while learning how to make the world more accessible to all different bodies.

3rd–5th grade

Get an insider’s perspective of the inner workings of the human body. Bones, blood and brains become demystified as you look at them on a cellular level.  Tackle real-world health and safety issues by working collaboratively to create innovative solutions.

Food DIY

Austin’s famous for a variety of good eats.  Thinkery’s looking to help the next generation of kitchen innovators start putting their stamp on Austin’s local food culture. Get a taste of the complex science behind food (and maybe some yummy guacamole, too)!

Pre-K–K

What does food do?  It fuels your body and (hopefully) tastes great…but after this camp, you’ll look at food in a whole new way.  Touch, smell, tinker and taste your way through the week as we explore food through many scientific lenses.

1st–2nd grade

We don’t mind if you play with your food.  In fact, we insist on it!  Dabble, doodle and make a mess as we discover how food weaves its way into science, art, math, engineering and technology.

3rd–5th grade

Explore cuisine on both a micro and macro level.  Food takes on brand-new forms and functions and we promise you’ll never look at what’s on your plate the same way again.

Make It or Break It

Make it, break it and build it again.  This maker’s camp uses the cyclical design process to constantly innovate and improve on your awesome inventions! You’ll be challenged to deconstruct and fabricate, then do it again. Use what you learn from each attempt to make your next iteration that much better!

Pre-K–K

Learn to manipulate materials—and demolish fears of failure—through exploration stations, design challenges and movement activities. Kids use trial and error as they learn build up and tear down with intention and know-how.

1st–2nd grade

Failure is not an option—it’s mandatory! Learn how to embrace setbacks as an opportunity for innovation and use observation to develop—and eventually perfect—awesome new creations.

3rd–5th grade

It’s a fun week of maker madness! Take things apart to understand how they work, then reassemble them in a whole new way. Utilize open design spaces and creative problem solving to brainstorm, prototype, and test out your ideas.

Tinkering With Color & Light

Sparks will fly as we tinker with cool circuits, bright lights and vibrant colors. Explore how light is used in science, art, medicine, engineering and more. Illuminate your imagination by creating your very own world of color and light.

Pre-K–K

You’ve painted before, but have you ever painted with light? Use hands-on creative play to discover science of illumination! Light up your imagination as you tinker at the intersection of art and science.

1st–2nd grade

Move alongside tiny electrons at the speed of light. Surf wavelengths as they bend through prisms and explore how light can move and be used. Work together in teams to engineer inventions that glow, conduct, and spark through the power of circuits.

3rd–5th grade

Become a citizen of your own solar-powered city! Explore real-world challenges while brainstorming and building solutions as engineers. Use unusual tools and technologies to plan, design, and engineer the city of the future!

Technology-Focused Themes

Level Up

What goes into our favorite games?  Strategy, skill, luck…and really great design!  From Mahjong to Minecraft, Monopoly to Mario, learn about popular games both analog and digital.  Then collaborate and compete to create your own!

1st–2nd grade

Reverse engineer the best-loved games to discover what makes them so exciting, engaging and entertaining. Puzzle over strategy, collaboration, and chance to invent your own game!

3rd–5th grade

Don’t just play the game—make your own! Use problem-solving skills to create both virtual and physical games. New challenges and old favorites will keep gamers of all experience levels entertained.

Program, Animate, Create

There are many different ways to tell a story.  This summer, we’ll explore exciting new technologies to help kids bring their imaginations to life!  Discover the creative possibilities of coding, customizing games, and telling stories through a variety of media.

1st–2nd grade

Movies, TV shows, video games—what do they all have in common?  Creativity expressed through cool technology! Bring your story to life through different innovative automations.

3rd–5th grade

Dream it. Design it. Develop it. Learn the components of master storytelling and how different technologies—including music, animation, and digital design—can be used to share human experiences.

Secret Agent Robot

You have been selected for a super-secret mission. Explore the basic concepts of robotics and computer programming in this creative, interactive camp for super sleuths. Develop digital literacy skills as you design and program your robot to maneuver through mysterious mazes, crack cryptic codes and collect enigmatic clues.

1st–2nd grade

Complete a secret mission while exploring robotic concepts! Join Thinkery spy school and learn to use programming to overcome any obstacle. Command your robotic contraptions using cutting-edge technology!

3rd–5th grade

Challenge yourself to a week-long secret agent mission. Take on a new spy persona as you face thrills with newly-learned coding skills! Program your secret agent sidekick to use sensors and gears to complete mazes, break codes, and collect clues.
