How is a Think Lab different from other activities at Thinkery?
Thinkery’s 45-minute educator-led Think Labs provide an opportunity for families to learn together as they more deeply engage in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) topics. Think Labs provide a more intimate setting for participants to engage with Thinkery staff and use learning materials and activities that are exclusive to these fun, interactive workshop-style experiences.
We offer Think Labs on AISD holidays with topics that change throughout the year. Come explore a new theme all year long!
What will we be doing during the Think Lab?
Most of our Think Labs build off of STEAM-based themes and concepts that are present throughout our museum and involve more advanced tools or more complex processes. You’ll explore materials ranging from common household items to circuits to microscopes and sometimes we get messy – and you get to leave the cleaning to us! During these Think Labs, families and groups will work together to learn a new skill or work on a project.
Who can attend?
Think Labs are designed for families with children ages 4 and up. Research shows that children learn best alongside caring, responsive adults, so we design our workshops for children and parents/caregivers to learn together! All Think Labs require at least one accompanying adult to collaboratively work alongside their child. Families with multiple children, please plan to have more than one adult join the experience. It’s more fun when everyone has a lab partner! For families with younger children, we recommend arranging for the other adult to play in a nearby gallery during the Think Lab.
How do I register for a Think Lab?
All participants, including adults, participating in the workshop are required to purchase tickets in advance either online or onsite at the Admissions desk at the entrance or the Reservations desk located on the second floor. Due to limited seating capacity and limited specialized materials, we sell based on available seats which includes adults and additional children joining the workshop.
When should we arrive for our Think Lab?
We ask that our registered participants start lining up outside Kitchen Lab 5 -10 minutes prior to the workshop start time. Please have tickets or receipt ready to present at check-in.
How is the price of a Think Lab determined?
The Think Lab price helps to offset the cost of providing a deeper and more intimate learning experience, which includes specialized materials not available during a general admission visit, the use of a program space and a lower staff to participant ratio.
