Join us to tinker your hearts out!
Perfect for families with children ages 4 and up, each Tinkering Take Home is held in a small group for a focused and collaborative experience. Create and collaborate side-by-side as you explore complex processes, use tools, design and build using unique materials. Tinkering Take Homes are available from 10 am – 4 pm on a first-come, first-served basis.
May – Wood Burning Art
Create a custom wooden sign to hang in your personal space or give as a gift. In this workshop, you’ll learn the process of going from a bland, blank piece of wood to something worth showing off. Experience how to distress, stain, and even burn designs into wood.

How long is each Tinkering Take Home?
Each Tinkering Take Home will vary in length of time based on participants’ interests and topics. Families are encouraged to build together in Spark Shop and extend their learning by tinkering for as long or as little time as they choose. Families will typically spend between 15-30 minutes on a Tinkering Take Home.
Who can attend?
Tinkering Take Homes are designed for families with children ages 4 and older. We ask that an adult remain in Spark Shop with their child to work alongside them on the Tinkering Take Home project. We find it is helpful that families with children of multiple ages plan to have more than one adult chaperone accompany them during their museum visit.
Tinkering Take Homes are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a max capacity of 12 people in the build area at a time. Once the basic build is completed, families then rotate to a creation and tinkering area. This allows another family to jump in and get started on their build without a long wait time.
Why is there an added fee for the kit?
In addition to the drop-in activities that are free with admission, families have the option to purchase a making activity kit and work on a project that they keep and take home. This way they can dive deeper with making materials that the average family may not have easy access to like LED’s, motors, battery packs and circuits, and take their project home to continue tinkering with.
How many Tinkering Take Home kits can a family purchase?
As many as they’d like while supplies last. The kits are sold on a first-come, first-served basis
This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the
City of Austin Economic Development Department
