Have you seen flat pieces of tin transformed into works of art? Those are hojalatas!
Hojalata is a traditional Mexican tin art where artisans use their imagination to turn simple, inexpensive tin into beautiful, detailed pieces. Candelabras, jewelry boxes, and even nativity scenes often begin as nothing more than a sheet of tin until the artist brings them to life. Sometimes glass, mirrors, or colorful talavera tiles are added as extra accents, making each piece unique.
During Latiné & Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), exploring hojalatas is a fun way to celebrate and learn something new about Mexican culture. And the best part? You can make your own version at home!
