America Recycles Day in Space 8, November 15th
Written by Taylor Rather, Thinkery Marketing Intern | November 12, 2015
As America Recycles Day approaches, it’s important to understand the significance of this national day. Most people are aware of the benefits of recycling on the environment. Sometimes though, it’s hard to know exactly what that entails and how one person can really make an impact. Our friends at R2 Corp are Austin’s resource for electronics recycling. R2 helps people throughout the Austin community make an impact every day. Recycling electronics is not as common as traditional metal/glass/plastic recycling but it too makes a big difference.
To start, it’s important to know what exactly recycling electronics can do. By recycling old phones, computers, TV’s, etc., you are allowing them to be refurbished and reused to make other materials instead of allowing them to find their way into our already overflowing landfills. Also, electronics contain materials such as mercury and lead that can be toxic if released into the environment through landfills.
As an added bonus, you’re able to do something productive with all those old electronics you have lying around the house. New technology is rapidly available, and we are always wanting the next best thing. Because of this, “E-waste is the fastest growing municipal waste stream in America”, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. People can’t get enough of new technology, but don’t always consider where the old stuff is ending up.
Here’s where you come in to help! R2 Corp will be at the Thinkery on America Recycles Day, November 15th, to demonstrate their e-waste shredder. This shredder can shred old all sorts of tech materials, including old hard-drives. This is extremely helpful if you’re trying to recycle an old computer but don’t want sensitive or important old data floating around. So come to the Thinkery between 10am and 6pm to learn more about helping our environment, watch some old computers get torn up in the shredder, and meet the Austin R2 Corp team, who are doing their part to protect the Earth! If you can’t make it to the Thinkery November 15th, bring your old electronics daily to the Thinkery and use our R2 receptacles to help make the world a little greener.
