Brittany, STEAM Learning Institute Senior STEAM Educator, leads professional development programs like EdExchange. This program fosters collaboration between Thinkery STEAM Educators and Educators through hands-on workshops and on-campus support, aimed at integrating STEAM-based activities and lessons into classrooms.
Cultivating Strong Partnerships
Building strong partnerships with educators is key to having successful joyful learning experiences. During EdExchange workshops, Brittany prioritizes play and experimentation to cultivate a positive and trusting environment. Workshops are a great starting point, but the real magic happens during on-campus collaborations where Brittany can provide more support and assistance to educators as they become more confident using new tools in the classroom. “That’s where I am better able to build individual relationships with each educator.”
From Discomfort to Discovery
One standout from the program has been the evolution of educators’ comfort with certain STEAM topics – such as circuits. Brittany recalls how some initially expressed discomfort with the topic but later delved into advanced applications during on-campus sessions. Educators explored paper circuits through floral artwork, experimented with Squishy Circuits, and even created communication devices using Makey Makeys and Scratch. “These each extended the educator’s learning, and my own, beyond the simpler paper circuits that we created in the workshop. Each educator grew more confident facilitating circuit activities, which is the primary goal of the program.”
Celebrating Curiosity
The impact extends beyond educators to their students, who visibly embrace learning with enthusiasm. “I often see students celebrating their learning with each other, jumping up and down or expressing excitement in other ways,” Brittany observes. “There is always a lot of silliness and laughter during activities like design challenges, from students and educators alike. I love to see students indulging their curiosities without fear of mistakes or failure, and that’s where the joyful learning begins!” she reflects warmly.
Brittany’s approach to professional development not only equips educators with new skills but also fosters a culture of exploration and joy in learning. Through collaborative partnerships and a commitment to hands-on, play-based experiences, Brittany’s role in Thinkery continues to empower educators and inspire students in the journey of discovery and growth.
