April 30 marks a special celebration across Mexico every year. El Día de los Niños or Children’s Day is a national celebration of children that was created to help create joyful childhoods and allow children to feel special and integrated into the community.
History
Although certain cities across Mexico had a celebration for children, the first official nationwide Día de los Niños was on April 30, 1925. This was the year anniversary of President Alvaro Obregon signing the now League of Nations’ Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It wasn’t until 1954 that the United Nations began recommending that every country set aside a day to celebrate children each year. Since then, other countries have chosen their own days to celebrate Children’s Day with the United Nations celebrating World Children’s Day on November 20.
Celebrations
El Día de los Niños is still a highly celebrated day in Mexico. Celebrations are focused on making children feel special and loved. People across the country may celebrate in different ways, but some popular festivities include having piñatas, giving small gifts like toys, playing music, and playing games. The schools and community participate as well. Schools remain open but focus on having a fun day filled with activities, and businesses will hold special events in celebration of the joyous day.
