At Thinkery, we believe in the power of joyful learning, creating an environment where children can learn, play, and explore the world around them. Our Thinkery Team is one of the driving forces behind that, including Charlie, our Education Programs Coordinator. Get to know Charlie a little better and learn about what inspires them to bring so much joy and excitement to our camps and programs.
What are three fun facts about yourself?
1. I’ve volunteered or worked in museums since elementary school.
2. I love games and anything that involves problem solving (crosswords, puzzles, sudoku, board games, etc).
3. I’m almost always planning an elaborately themed party. For my last birthday, I created and hosted my own game show, which also featured drag performances by some of my closest friends.
What’s your role at Thinkery?
I am the Education Programs Coordinator on the STEAM Learning Institute team. My main responsibility is running Thinkery’s summer camp program. I plan camp curriculum, hire and manage the camp staff, and oversee most of the behind the scenes logistics that make camp happen. When I’m not working on camp, I’m collaborating with colleagues on the SLI team or working on our C.R.E.A.T.E. partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Austin Area.
What is your favorite part about working at Thinkery?
I love that joy is the driving force behind what we do. My job is to bring joy to children and families, while also equipping them with new skills and knowledge. Although there are times that may be stressful or chaotic, I know that every day I will witness a moment of joy and, more often than not, my work helps make that joyful moment possible.
What’s one of your favorite memories at Thinkery?
During Spring Break Camp in 2024, the theme was joy, and we explored how we can use tech and tools to make people happy. Campers created 3D printed replicas of their loved ones’ favorite objects, choreographed a flash mob to entertain museum guests, and threw a party for a robot complete with handmade costumes and decor. Campers were motivated to try new things and to work with others because they were doing it to make people happy.
I love that camp not only gives kids the opportunity to work with cool tools and new technology, but it also shows them how their creations and their actions can impact the people and the world around them.
What does joyful learning mean to you?
Joyful learning happens when learners feel safe and when their interests are engaged by what they are learning. I feel very lucky to have grown up in a lot of joyful learning environments, whether it was at school, in museums, or with my family. I think those joyful spaces have helped mold me into a curious, creative, and playful person. I want Thinkery camp to be a place where any kid can not only feel safe but feel curious and excited to face new ideas and challenges. Joyful learning builds confidence, inspires more exploration, and establishes a love of learning.
We’re so grateful to have someone like Charlie on our team, creating fun and educational experiences that not only teach kids new skills but also fill them with joy and wonder. Whether they’re planning a camp or a themed party, Charlie’s dedication to bringing joy to others shines through in everything they do!
