After eight incredible years, including the last five as CEO, Andy Bell is stepping down from his role on July 3 to take on a new role with FIRST Robotics. Under Andy’s leadership — and thanks to the creativity of our team, the dedication of our Board, and the unwavering support of our community — Thinkery has grown in bold and meaningful ways. Together, we launched Little Thinkers Preschool, expanded impactful partnerships across Central Texas, and opened Thinkery – Del Valle. These milestones reflect not only Andy’s vision but the collective heart and generosity of the people who power Thinkery every day.
Before his last day, we asked Andy to reflect on what his the last eight years at Thinkery has meant to him, the memories he’ll carry forward, and what joyful learning means to him.
What accomplishment are you most proud of during your time as CEO?
“Thinkery has long been a place that sparks a love for learning in children through joyful, STEAM-based experiences. I’m proudest of our work to make these experiences even more accessible to ALL children. There are two ways that we worked to make this possible. First, we deepened our work with community partners to develop new, innovative models for learning that deepen our transformational approach to education. And second, we’ve stayed focused on making sure these experiences reach ALL children, especially those who have been furthest from opportunity. The C.R.E.A.T.E. program with Boys & Girls Clubs is a powerful example of this community-driven, innovative spirit. It is proof of what’s possible when we come together to reimagine learning with creativity, equity, and joy at the center. “
What will you miss most about Thinkery?
“I will miss our extraordinary Thinkery team most of all. Watching these brilliant, dedicated individuals bring joyful STEAM experiences to life — and witnessing the daily impact on children — is nothing short of magical. This place is special because of the people who make it so, and I’m endlessly inspired by their passion and commitment to transforming the lives of young learners. ”
What are some of your favorite memories at Thinkery?
“There are so many incredible memories from my eight years of leadership at Thinkery. The ribbon cutting for Thinkery – Del Valle stands out. Opening this first-of-its-kind neighborhood museum, embedded in a Del Valle ISD Title I school, and seeing the community’s reaction is something that I will never forget.
The everyday moments will stick with me too. I’ll never forget the joy of engaging with our Little Thinker Preschoolers and witnessing that magical spark when curiosity ignites. And yes, an impromptu staff dance party after a Spark After Dark cleanup definitely makes the list too. “
What does Thinkery and joyful learning mean to you?
“Thinkery is the embodiment of joyful learning — experiences that ignite curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love for discovery so that all kids can thrive now and in the future. Every child has limitless potential, but not every child has the same opportunities. Too often, traditional learning environments overlook the natural creativity kids bring to the world. Thinkery is making a difference by rethinking how we learn and by creating spaces that nurture the creative problem-solvers and bold leaders of tomorrow.”
Thank you to Andy for his thoughtful leadership over the past eight years. We’re grateful for his contributions — and for the incredible work our entire team, Board, and community have done together to make Thinkery a beloved Austin institution.
As we move forward, we’re excited to introduce Jessie Stewart as our Interim CEO. Jessie has been part of the Thinkery family for years — as a board member, supporter, and parent — and brings deep experience in nonprofit leadership. We can’t wait for you to get to know her. Look out for a special Q&A with Jessie coming soon.
