At Thinkery, our goal is to inspire and equip ALL children to cultivate a lifelong love of learning, so they thrive. To achieve this, we strive to ensure that every child and family feels a sense of belonging within our museums, programs, and community, where we come together to celebrate and learn about the diverse cultures and traditions that make our communities unique. In honor of Black History Month, Thinkery is excited to celebrate and highlight the rich cultural heritage of Black communities through various activities, books, and partnerships that inspire learning and connection. This month, we invite families to join us for a special Spark Shop maker activity, where visitors can create their very own Kente Cloth, a timeless symbol of African pride and identity.
Kente Cloth: A Living Legacy
Kente Cloth is a vibrant, handwoven textile from Ghana, West Africa, that has become a powerful symbol of African heritage, pride, and identity in the modern Black experience. Originally reserved for royalty among the Ashanti and Ewe peoples, Kente has evolved into a widely recognized fabric that carries deep cultural significance across the African diaspora.
Today in the U.S., Kente Cloth is worn to commemorate special occasions, such as graduations, where it symbolizes achievement and the continuity of African traditions. It’s also seen in celebrations and holidays, representing a deep connection to African roots. Activists and leaders have used Kente in political demonstrations to show solidarity, while public figures often incorporate it into their clothing to bring visibility to African culture on the global stage.
Kente Cloth is more than just vibrant colors and intricate designs—each pattern holds deep significance, conveying messages of history, wisdom, and identity. The colors and designs often represent proverbs, moral lessons, and important historical events. For many in the African American community, Kente serves as a powerful connection to African ancestry, fostering a sense of pride and belonging. Wearing Kente is a celebration of cultural heritage, highlighting the achievements and resilience of Black communities worldwide.
