Building with Biology is a nationwide project funded by the National Science Foundation. The daylong event is an exciting way for scientists and families to team up and explore synthetic biology in an immersive, hands-on environment.
Oh, and did we mention that it’s tomorrow, September 3? It is! From 10 am–6pm, Thinkery will have several interactive stations with special activities facilitated by scientists in the fields of synthetic biology, biology and genetics. Don’t believe us? Just take a look!
Bio Bistro – Would you eat it? Would you think about eating it? Play a card-based game that highlights current and future synthetic biology-based foods, and discuss the problems researchers are trying to solve with these foods.
Kit of Parts – Explore the engineering aspect of synthetic biology by solving challenges through building a model cell with standardized genetic parts. Pick and choose parts to design and build a model of a complex living system.
See DNA – Learn all about deoxyribonucleic acid while using simple tools to extract visible DNA from cells of wheat germ.
Super Organisms – Discover how synthetic biologists can solve problems through creativity and the engineering process. Design your very own superhero with special traits to keep people from polluted water. Then design a super organism to create new ways of cleaning up oil spills.
Tech Tokens – Which technologies should be used and developed? Investing in the future comes with a lot of decision making. Play a fun game where you cash in to current and future technologies.
VirEx Delivery – Explore the potential for engineered viruses to deliver beneficial, targeted genetic information to sites throughout the body. Create a model that reprograms viruses to cure diseases.
Join us September 3 from 10 am–6 pm as we spend the day discussing, discovering and exploring synthetic biology!
